XA Student Ministry Update, 3-9-2011

I have a lot to share today , including some new stuff and some things that haven’t been mentioned in a while, so I will try to be brief and as organized as possible!

  • After a good deal of prayer, seeking,  (and a few weeks of “taking a break”), I’ve made the decision on how I’d like to utilize our Wednesday evenings with our teenagers now that the church has begun meeting for LIFT services again.  We are going to begin an informal Student Servant Leadership Team tasked with the responsibility of continuing to transform us from a ministry “to” students into a ministry “by” students. We will do this through training, mentoring, and event planning (not just where students say what they would like to do, but are actually enabled to actually begin doing it). This won’t be for everyone, but specifically for those ready to flesh out their relationship with Jesus to make a difference in the lives of others. We will begin at 6:30 this evening. Adult youth leaders are welcome as well!
  • This Sunday morning we will continue our series on cults and other religions by exploring Judaism (9:00 am). Sunday afternoon at INSIDEOUT we will continue our “Grow Up” series by focusing  on the role that other people can play in our spiritual growth (this is session 3 small group leaders!). We will then go to our house (224 Wendover Ln) for nachos and hang out time! We will follow our regular schedule of large group/small group from 4:30-6:00 and Afterglow until 7:30. Students can be picked up either at the church or at our house!
  • Along those lines, one of my goals next week is to publish a schedule for all of our AfterGlows on Sunday evenings until the end of the school year. If anyone would like to have our students over to your home/yard on a Sunday evening for an hour or so please let us know! We could either feed everyone ahead of time or some families like to provide a simple meal of some sort which we can reimburse. Our schedule is pretty open the first couple weeks of April and the entire month of May.  Just let me know!
  • Don’t forget that this Sunday March 13 is Daylight Saving Time…the bad one! So remember to set your clocks ahead an hour and go to bed a little earlier than usual on Saturday night!
  • This has been big news in the church as a whole, but I have yet to mention it specifically as of yet, but Sunday March 20 our church has been asked to help volunteer for the Wrightsville Beach Marathon. All teenagers are encouraged to sign up to volunteer on Sunday morning after the service if they have not done so already. There will be a volunteer dinner on Thursday March 17 at Shell Island resort. On the 20th we will NOT meet for Lifegroup at 9:00, our church worship service at 10:15, or for INSIDEOUT at 4:30. Instead our whole church will meet at 5:00 pm for a celebration service.
  • Be in prayer for our Washington DC mission trip April 17-21. We currently have one space available so let me know if there is interest. This trip is for grade 8 and above and cost is $150 but we can help if money is an issue. Our team currently is Jon Hobgood, Naomi Trowbridge, Jesse Clifton, Kristen Young, Jonathan Durbin, McKenzie Thompson, Cooper Bass, NIckie Trowbridge, Jonathan Morris, Ben Flournoy, Abby Jernigan,  Ryan Herrmann, and Taran Casper. If status on any of these students has changed let me know ASAP! I’d like to schedule a training meeting for the team at 3:30pm on Sunday March 20 before the celebration service at 5:00 (see above). We could order pizza and invite parents to come during the last 15 minutes to ask questions. Let me know if this will work! (P.S. as I was typing this I received our tentative schedule…very exciting stuff!)
  • Finally, please keep in mind our Wilmington-wide Lock in, “Love and Sacrifice”, on March 24, 6:00pm-March 2,5 8:00 am at First Baptist Church Activity Center. It will be a lot of fun, but also a great time of encouragement in practically serving our community! I will likely bring a group from the church leaving at 5:00, but parents may also drop off (before 6:00) and pick up from the location. This is a free event and even includes dinner. Schedule is attached! Students who plan to go are asked to sign up in the trailer or parents can respond and let me know.

Lots going on! Any questions please ask!

Blessings!

Jon
